"ADHD From A to Z: Advances in the Understandig and Management of ADHD in Children adn Adolescents"

Friday, September 21, 2012 – Omaha

Russell Barkley, Ph.D.

This workshop was intended as an overview of major advances of the past decade in understanding the nature, causes, life course, and management of ADHD in children and teens. It provides an overview of many of the most important topics on the disorder concerning nature, diagnostic criteria, subtypes, prevalence, comorbid disorders, life course impairments, etiologies, the empirically supported treatments, disproven remedies, parent counseling, parent training, school management, and medication management. The program is designed to acquaint participants with what is currently known about these various topics providing a state-of-the-art summation about the disorder.

The Nature and Theory of ADHD as a Disorder Of Executive Functioning and Self-Regulation
Substantial research has accumulated to show that ADHD is more than simply a problem with attention, hyperactivity, or even impulse control. Many of the cognitive deficits associated with ADHD lie in the domain of executive functioning in neuropsychology. Since the executive functions provide for human self-regulation, all this suggests that ADHD is a disorder of self-regulation. This presentation will review a theory of ADHD that integrates these concepts into a more coherent and unifying model of ADHD. This model provides for a deeper understanding of the nature of ADHD and its associated cognitive and social deficits along with numerous implications for the management of the disorder.

Sponsored by the Nebraska Psychological Association, and conducted in cooperation with the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Psychiatry, The Creighton University Department of Psychiatry and the Nebraska School Psychologists Association

"The Art & Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness

into Psychological Practice"

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

The Jackie Guahn Multicultural Center

University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D.

Santa Clara University

Mindfulness is defined as the awareness that arises out of intentionally paying attention in an open, caring, and non-judgmental way. Hundreds of empirical studies demonstrate the beneficial effects of mindfulness mediation in treating depression, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, substance abuse, heart disease, eating disorders, and cancer. Dr. Shapiro would like to broaden the paradigm for research in meditation that includes a vision of optimal health across diverse populations. In particular she is exploring the precise mechanisms of action involved in mindfulness practice, determining mediators through which the transformational changes occur.

Dr. Shapiro lectures and leads mindfulness training programs nationally and internationally.
